Hi! This is Marcy Jellison. Welcome to my new blog! Through my career as a performer and my work with many talented and aspiring singers over the years, I have made many observations about the art of singing. Here, I will share some of my experiences with you by presenting a new voice tip for you each week.
These tips are not meant to replace individual, private voice lessons. My plan here is to create a dialogue about commonly asked questions and concerns my students have shared with me. I hope that the information I share will inspire you.
This week, we’ll start with a question that students have often asked me: How do you find your authentic singing voice?
I think it is a combination of magic and mechanics.
The magic of singing involves accessing your heart, responding to your soul, and activating your imaginative ear.
To do that successfully — to recreate what you imagine and feel — it is helpful to understand the mechanics of singing. The mechanics of singing are the coordination of breathing, resonance, and articulation. When you develop truly good coordination, you are able to “get out of your own way.” All unnecessary tensions and efforts go away. You will be able to communicate directly with your audience.
As you are learning and when you practice, you’ll want to explore both the magic and the mechanics: that is the secret to finding your authentic sound.
